Scope
The committee was established in response to a resolution that the government should fund old-age pensions, using the manufacture and sale of tobacco products to raise the required funds. The committee lapsed at the prorogation of parliament without producing a report. Inquiries conducted by this and a similar committee in the House of Representatives resulted in a Royal Commission on Old-Age Pensions, commencing in February 1905.
